Where did the forecast go?

Hey guys…I know most of you already know where to find the forecasts now that they are over on Solspot.com…our new, much more powerful site.

But just in case some of you new visitors googled in…I wanted to make sure that you can find all of the new cool stuff. This blog isn’t updating the forecast anymore, all of that has been pushed over to the new site. Here are a few of the links that will hopefully help you find some waves (and hopefully good conditions too.)

For those of you that just wanted the forecast without any of the bells and whistles…The same ol’ Socal Forecast can be found here (this is the normal forecast for all of Southern California and generally gives you all the info you need to find surf for the next day)

Since the Southern California coastline is all jacked up (uh I mean unique)…we took the forecast and broke it down into a bunch of different “zones” that help to show how much swell, what sort of wind, and how the tides are going to affect the different regions.

WNW-NW swell (280-300) mostly holds on Tuesday while new WNW windswell fills in and the small SW swell fades out.

Most spots will start out in the chest-shoulder high range with a few shoulder-head high sets at the standout NW facing breaks of North County.

South County spots will be bigger, averaging more in the shoulder-head high+ range with some overhead sets mixing in.

It looks like most spots will see an increase as the WNW windswell continues to build through the afternoon/evening.

Shapewise the onshore wind is going to be the biggest problem…but the high mid-morning tide isn’t going to do us any favors either. Look for cleanest conditions early in the morning…and then bumpy, choppy, shape from mid-morning on. W winds are supposed to get an early jump on things…starting off around 5- 10 knots for the morning and then quickly building into the 12-15 knot range by the afternoon. Patchy fog and cooler air temps will also be on tap throughout the day.

New WNW-NW swell (285-300) will be arriving on Monday…mixing with a smaller but slowly building SW swell, and some increasing local windswell. Conditions will be clean for the morning but the high-tide swampthing will screw with the surf shape as it peaks around 9-10am.

North County’s average breaks will be in the knee high range with some inconsistent waist-high+ sets sneaking in at the better NW facing spots that light the higher tide. A few of the standouts will have more consistent waist high waves with some inconsistent chest high+ sets. By the afternoon look for the average spots to be more around waist-chest high while the NW standout breaks see some shoulder high+ sets.

Average South County breaks will be fairly playful…most spot will be in the waist-chest high range with some shoulder high+ sets showing at the NW standouts. By the afternoon look for chest-head high surf at the average breaks while the standout NW spots see some shoulder-overhead sets. Shape won’t be great by the afternoon thanks to building winds but there will be some waves out there if you can find a spot with a little bit of wind protection.

Look for light winds…mostly variable below 5 knots for the morning. NW winds do start to fill in fairly early…picking up around lunchtime and we can expect them to top out around 13-15+ knots by the afternoon. Chance for some fog through the morning as well.

WNW-NW swell (280-300) will peak over Friday night and will hold into early Saturday…the swell starts losing energy by the afternoon and will drop even more as we head into Sunday. SW swell (195-215) will be fading steadily through the weekend so expect less surf at the summer breaks. Conditions look great for the weekend…but the tides are a bit fat in the mornings…so you might have to stick to spots that can handle a lot of extra-water.

North County will be in the knee-waist high range on Saturday with some inconsistent chest-high+ sets showing at the standout combo spots. This is going to drop more on Sunday with the average spots fading down to mostly knee high leftovers while the standouts see some inconsistent waist high sets.

South County will do a lot better on the WNW-NW swell…most of the energy is 290-300 which the region can pull in pretty well. On Saturday look for the average spots to see chest-shoulder high surf while the standout breaks see some inconsistent head high sets. By Sunday the WNW’er will have dropped off a lot…look for most average breaks to back down to knee-waist high+ on the sets while the standouts see mostly chest high surf with a few inconsistent chest-shoulder high sets.

Nice beach weather this weekend…winds will be light and variable to light offshore for the morning on both Saturday and Sunday…the winds will stay light through the afternoons as well…just going variable onshore but staying around 10-12 knots for most areas.

Look for NW swell (290-300), local windswell, and a slowly fading SW swell (195-215) to be on tap through the morning. Then a new WNW-NW swell (280-300) and more WNW-NW windswell start to arrive through mid-morning continue to fill in through the rest of the day.

North County will be a bit shadowed from the WNW-NW energy…but there will be enough juice slipping through the islands as well as the SW leftovers still showing at the summer/combo breaks to keep some playful waves breaking. Look for most spots to hold in the waist-chest high range with some shoulder high+ sets sneaking into the best exposed spots as the new swell mix fills in (and the tide drops) later in the day.

South County is a lot more exposed to the mix of swells so we can expect pretty consistent surf in the chest-head high range at the average spots through the morning and a few bigger sets showing as the tide drops through mid-morning. Look for the top NW spots to pull in some shoulder-overhead surf as the new WNW-NW swell fills in…likely getting into the overhead+ range by the afternoon tide push.

Winds look ok for the morning…light and variable for most areas…even a little light offshore in a few pockets. The wind shifts around to the WNW-NW around 12-15 knots by the afternoon.

The SW swell (195-215) slowly fades on Thursday while a new mix of NW swell (290-300) and NW windswell build in throughout the day. Unfortunately it looks like onshore winds will start up pretty early…so expect some bumpy shape for the morning and some chopped up conditions by the afternoon.

Most of North County and the average South County breaks will be in the waist-chest high range…with a few inconsistent shoulder high sets sneaking into the better combo breaks. The standout South County spots will be in the shoulder-head high range with some overhead waves. Expect the bigger South County sets to be inconsistent through the morning but becoming more and more frequent by the afternoon.

W winds are expected to pick up early…likely coming onshore around 5-8 knots for the morning but building steadily into the 15-20 knot range by the afternoon.

Our blend of WNW-NW swell will back down slowly on Saturday…leaving the sets a bit inconsistent and the surf a little gutless as both the size and swell-periods decrease. S-SW swell (180-200) will continue to hold, showing mostly in North County, but ninja-ing into a few of the South County summer spots as well.

On Saturday most spots will average around waist-chest high on the sets…with some inconsistent bigger waves showing at the really good combo spots. The standout breaks will be more in the waist-shoulder high range with some occasional bigger waves pushing in on the lower tides.

Sunday we will have some more WNW-NW swell (285-300) mixing in with the fading energy from Saturday and the backing off S-SW swell. Size will be pretty much the same as Saturday but there will be a bit more punch to the swell…and the bigger sets should be a bit more consistent by Sunday afternoon as the WNW-NW’er fills in a bit more. Combo spots will continue to be the biggest/most-consistent.

Both days look pretty clean during the mornings. Expect light and variable winds for most spots and a few areas with some very light offshore flow. It looks like we will be fighting a bit of a marine layer…maybe even some patchy fog…so don’t be surprised if visibility isn’t always that good. The winds should stay on the light side through the afternoons on both Saturday and Sunday…but expect the sea-breeze to develop enough to driving some variable 10-12 knot onshore flow into the more exposed spots.

The WNW-NW swell backs down a bit on Friday while the S-SW swell holds (but turns a touch more Southerly). The NPAC energy is aimed a lot more towards the south county spots…so expect larger more consistent surf from La Jolla on southward.

North County breaks will average in the waist-chest high range with some inconsistent shoulder high sets showing through the morning. South County spots will have some chest-shoulder high surf on average with some shoulder-head high sets at the standout NW facing/combo breaks.

Look for mostly light and variable winds in the morning with some pockets of light offshore winds here and there. Look for variable onshore winds around 10-12 knots for the afternoon.

The combo swell of WNW-NW swell and S-SW swell will continue on Thursday…with the NPAC swell backing off slightly, while the S-SW swell gets a touch bigger.

Average North County breaks will be in the waist-chest high range with some inconsistent shoulder high sets showing on the lower tides. South County spots will have some chest-shoulder high surf on average with some shoulder-head high+ sets at the standout NW facing/combo breaks.

Look for mostly light and variable winds in the morning with some pockets of light offshore winds in a few spots. These winds will hold through mid-morning but then turn westerly around lunch and will eventually peak around 10-15+ knots by late afternoon. New WNW-NW swell (285-300) will push in on Wednesday…sending some shadowed energy into North County but hitting spots from La Jolla on southward a lot better. There will be a little bit of S-SW swell in the water as well, which will be good for knee-waist high waves at the purely S-facing breaks.

On average North County breaks will be in the waist-chest high range with some inconsistent shoulder high+ sets showing on the lower tides. South County spots will have some chest-shoulder high surf on average with some shoulder-head high+ sets at the standout NW facing/combo breaks.

Winds and weather look pretty nice again on Wednesday. Mostly sunny skies with some light/variable to light offshore winds on tap for the morning. Variable onshore winds around the 10-14 knot range will develop through the afternoon.

Saturday look for mostly small, tide swamped, surf in the morning. Most spots will be in the knee-waist high range with some chest high+ sets at the standouts. South County standouts will be a little bigger…more chest-shoulder high+. W-NW winds will get a jump on things pretty early so expect sloppier conditions moving in by midmorning and just getting worse as we head into the afternoon.

Sunday conditions clean up, though we will still have some tide issues in the morning. We will also see some new WNW-NW swell (285-300) mixing in with the new windswell and a touch of S-SW swell. North County can expect more consistent chest-shoulder high surf with some inconsistent plus sets at the best combo spots. Down in South County…wave heights will build into the chest-head high range for most of the exposed spots and shoulder-overhead high sets at the standouts. Winds will start off light offshore and then shift variable onshore around 10-13 knots for the afternoon.

Just some NW windswell leftovers, background WNW-NW swell, and some inconsistent S-SW swell, on tap for Friday. Look for nearly flat conditions for the morning as we shuffle through the high AM tide. Most North County spots will be in the knee-waist high range off of this mix…but a few of the better NW facing breaks will have some waist-chest high sets showing after the tide drops. S facing spots will average around knee-waist high but there will be some inconsistent chest high sets sneaking into those breaks as well.

South County spots can expect waist-chest high surf for most exposed areas. The standout NW facing spots, mostly at the beach breaks, will have some shoulder high surf with some plus sets mixing in on the lower tides.

All areas can expect the surf to drop off in the afternoon as the majority of the energy drains out with the dropping NW windswell.

Look for E-NE winds around 5-10 knots for the morning with the potential for some 10-15 knot gusts near the wind-prone passes and canyons. Those winds shift to the NW around 10-15 knots for the afternoon.

Conditions clean up but the NW windswell will be on the way down pretty quickly on Thursday. There will be some smaller WNW-NW energy and inconsistent S-SW swell holding in the background…but the windswell will be doing most of the work.

Most North County spots will be in the knee-waist high range off of this mix…but a few of the better NW facing breaks will have some waist-chest high sets showing after the tide drops. The standout NW facing breaks will have some almost shoulder high surf sneaking in at times. The best S facing spots will average around knee-waist high but there will be some inconsistent chest high sets sneaking into those breaks as well.

South County spots will be much bigger, more consistent, but won’t have the best shape since most of the energy will be pretty short-period sloppies. Look for chest-shoulder high surf for most exposed areas. The standout NW facing spots, mostly at the beach breaks, will have some shoulder-head high surf with some overhead sets mixing in.

All areas can expect the surf to drop off in the afternoon as the majority of the energy drains out with the dropping NW windswell.

Look for E-SE winds around 10 knots for the morning with the potential for some 10-15 knot gusts near the wind-prone passes and canyons. Those winds shift to the NW around 10-15 knots for the afternoon.

The more exposed South County breaks will be in the shoulder-head high range with some bigger head high to overhead+ waves pushing into the beach breaks down close to the border.

More freaking wind on tap for Wednesday…WNW-NW winds 10-20 knots for the morning…with some stronger near 25-30 knot gusts setting up by the afternoon.

A weak cold front moves through Monday night and helps set up some NW winds for Tuesday. Look for WNW-NW winds around 10-12 knots for the morning and then gusts hitting 15-25 knots by the afternoon.

There will be some increasing NW windswell in the water on Monday…along with some background WNW-NW energy and a touch of SW as well. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like conditions are going to cooperate enough for us to take advantage of it. There may be a very short window right around dawn but I wouldn’t spend much time/gas/hope on finding waves…basically I would only check it if you live a few blocks away. Sizewise North County spots can expect surf in the knee high range for most areas and a few waist high+ sets at a few of the standout breaks.

The more exposed South County breaks will be in the chest-shoulder high range with some bigger waves pushing into the beach breaks down close to the border.

Winds will be semi-variable onshore for the morning...possibly as low as 5 knots but still mostly onshore. Look for the winds to increase out of the WNW-NW 10-15 knots by midmorning and then nearing the 20-knot range by late in the day. Basically a hacked up mess by the afternoon. Ahh Good times.

On Saturday look for a mix of leftover WNW-NW swell, some new steep NW swell (295-300), and some SSW-SW energy (190-220). Most spots will be in the knee-waist high range while the standout combo breaks through the southern part of the county, where the NW energy shows best, will have some chest-shoulder high+ sets sneaking into the really exposed spots. Winds will be light through the morning but build out of the SW around 10-20 knots for late in the afternoon and bring in more rain for the evening.

Sunday the storm will still be lingering and it looks like winds will stay onshore for most of the morning. Expect about the same size as Saturday but with a little bit more W-NW windswell creeping into the well exposed spots. Expect variable onshore winds, mostly out of the S-SW, for early Sunday and then building NW winds 15-20+ knots for late in the afternoon.

San Diego Surf Forecast - for Thursday 3/4/2010

Fading but still healthy WNW-NW swell (285-300 but with most of the energy hitting 290-300) will send in plenty of waves on Thursday, and we will even see a small SW swell pulse up in the background but winds aren’t looking all that great.

North County will see surf in the chest-shoulder high range with some shoulder-head high+ sets showing at the best WNW-NW facing breaks.

South County spots will be bigger…running more in the shoulder-overhead range with some sets going a couple of feet overhead on the lower tides. The top south county breaks will probably have some bigger sets going a few feet+ overhead through the morning but expect those to get less and less frequent as the swell mix backs down.

Expect the best shape at the points and reefs with some protection from the NW winds. Beach breaks are probably going to be pretty walled.

Winds will be NW around 10-15 knots for the morning, which doesn’t totally blow out everything…I wouldn’t spend a lot of time looking for waves but it could be worth checking those little protected nuggets in the morning. NW winds 15-20 knots will move in through the afternoon.

Saturday starts of slow and breezy thanks to the new storm front pushing through the region and most leftover swell in the water through the early part of the day. Really it will probably be a better morning to surf the pillow for a little longer. Expect S-SW winds 10-15 knots with some 20 knot gusts and more rain/thunderstorms and other nonsense.

By Saturday afternoon a new W-NW swell (275-300) starts to arrive and come up fast…though conditions still look pretty crappy. I expect that the average WNW-NW facing spots will be in the shoulder-head high+ range by the end of the day…standout NW facing spots will have more consistent overhead surf.

Sunday the W-NW’er will peak and winds will back down shifting more to the WNW-NW and holding around 10-15 knots for the morning. The surf will be solid in the head high to overhead+ range for most of the average spots (and the good spots in North County) and sets going a few feet overhead to nearly double-overhead and bigger at the WNW-NW facing standouts down through South County.

The tide is still pretty high in the morning but there will be a lot of energy rolling around and it will have a good shot at breaking through the extra water. Even with the winds there should be enough waves and swell that the more protected breaks will work and will probably be cleaner since they don’t have as much exposure to the wind and chunkiness of the swell.

The mix of WNW-NW swell (280-300) and background, but still fun, SW swell (190-215) will hold/slowly fade on Friday. The WNW-NW swell will be a bit shadowed for North County but the SW swell will show ok (but might get lost in the NW energy) throughout most of the region.

North County will see surf in the chest-shoulder high range with some shoulder-head high sets showing at the best WNW-NW facing breaks. South County spots will be bigger…running more in the shoulder-overhead range with some sets going a couple of feet overhead as the tide drops off a bit. Shape will be pretty swampy through the dawn patrol so try and pick breaks that can handle a little extra water.

Winds will be light and variable through the morning. Look for building S-SE winds to fill in around midday and then continuing to strengthen by the afternoon/evening. It looks like the heavy winds and rain will push in late after midnight and hold through Saturday.

Hopefully this means that we will see cleaner conditions around dawn and then slowly building WNW-NW winds for midday into the afternoon, but keep in mind that there might be some texture/bump showing at a few areas. Look for NW winds 10-15+ knots on tap by the afternoon.

The leftover WNW-NW swell (280-300) and background SW swell will hold into Wednesday (well maybe a touch smaller than Tuesday). High tide will slow things down quite a bit through the morning.

North County breaks will average in the knee-waist high range…maybe a little bigger at the better combo breaks that can pull in some decent energy from both directions.

Standout NW facing breaks and excellent combo spots in South County will be in the waist-chest high range…with a few bigger near shoulder-head high sets showing through the lower tides. Look for a bit of increase in size and consistency late in the day but don’t count on conditions holding together.

Clean conditions on tap for the morning with mostly light offshore winds for the county and a few pockets of light and variable flow at the more protected spots. Look for SW-W winds around 10-15 knots by the afternoon. Increasing clouds and a chance for rain late in the day.

Mix of fading WNW-NW swell and some background SW swell will be on tap for Tuesday. North County breaks will average in the waist-chest high range…maybe a little bigger at the better combo breaks that can pull in some decent energy from both directions.

Standout NW facing breaks and excellent combo spots in South County will be in the waist-shoulder high range…with a few bigger near head high sets showing through the lower tides. Waves will be inconsistent and tide sensitive so you might have more fun with a “smaller wave” board just so you can power through the sections on the in-betweeners.

Clean conditions on tap for the morning with mostly light offshore winds for the county and a few pockets of light and variable flow at the more protected spots. Look for WNW-NW winds 10-14 knots for the afternoon.

New W swell starts to fill in late on Friday night and will continue to increase through Saturday morning…eventually peaking late Saturday and on into Sunday. Most of the weekend looks pretty sloppy but there may be a little window of surfy time showing early on Saturday morning.

At this point it looks like shoulder-high+ with some bigger sets starting to show through Saturday morning. At the swell peaks look for the average W facing breaks, and really most of North County, to be in the shoulder-head high range with some inconsistent overhead+ sets mixing. The standout WNW-NW facing spots will see consistent overhead surf with sets going several feet overhead…and even a little bigger down through South SD. Look for these waves to hold into early Sunday but then start to lose a little energy as we head into Sunday afternoon.

Saturday morning winds are forecast to be semi-onshore…but the models aren’t really all that certain. There is a chance that we will have light onshore S winds early in the morning, so there may be a few pockets of cleaner conditions at the protected spots. Look for W winds 10-20+ knots to develop by Saturday afternoon and hold through most of Sunday. It will be raining both days

Mostly weak waves on Friday morning…average spots holding around knee-waist high+ with a few waist-chest high sets sneaking into the top spots. The standout WNW/SW combo breaks, mostly through South County, will be more consistently in the knee-chest high range with some chest-shoulder high sets sneaking through at times. Even though the tide isn’t that high it will slow things down, try and surf before it fills in too much.

Winds will be S-SE around 8-12 knots for the morning and it looks like scattered showers moving in as we move throughout the day. Look for SW wind around 10-20 knots by the afternoon and periods of heavy rain.

The W-NW swell starts to drop on Tuesday and even the little background SW swell will start to trail off. Still despite the dropping swell we will have plenty of fun waves at the exposed breaks.

North County spots will be a bit shadowed from the WNW-NW’er but enough energy filters through to keep the average spots in the chest-shoulder high range with some head high sets mixing in during the lower tides. The standout North County spots will be more in the shoulder-head high range with a few plus sets showing before the tide slows things down.

South County breaks will be more in the shoulder-overhead range with sets still coming through a couple of feet overhead (and bigger) at the best standout breaks during the lower tides. times. Expect the most consistency and better shape through the early morning and then choppier/smaller conditions on tap through the afternoon.

Winds look good…mostly light and variable to light offshore for the morning. NW winds around 10-14 knots move in through the afternoon.

The new mix of W-NW swell (275-300) and new background SW swell (200-220) will continue to fill in on Saturday morning…eventually peaking Saturday afternoon and on into Sunday/Monday. At this point it looks like the North County spots will see surf in the chest-head high range with some inconsistent overhead+ sets showing on the lower tides as the swells peak. South County breaks can expect surf more in the shoulder-overhead range at the average spots. The top breaks will see more consistent head high and overhead surf with sets going several feet overhead as the W-NW’er really kicks in. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some bigger sets showing on Sunday after the tide drops off a bit.

Look for N-NE winds around 10-15 knots for Saturday and Sunday mornings. Afternoon winds will turn onshore out of the WNW around 10-13 knots, but may stay manageable at the protected spots.

The day will start off a bit slow with mostly leftover WNW energy doing most of the work…there will be a couple of new swells, a larger W-NW and a background SW swell, that will be filling in with some long-period energy throughout the day…showing bigger surf by late in the afternoon…and much larger surf on Saturday and Sunday.

North County breaks can expect surf in the knee-waist high range…with a few waist-chest high sets at the standout spots. High tide continues to hamper shape through the morning but there might be a few more workable waves showing at the really shallow sandbars.

South County breaks will see surf in the waist-chest high range with some chest-shoulder high waves at the better breaks.

Expect the surf to build slowly throughout the day as both the SW and W-NW swells fill in…unfortunately it doesn’t look like a ton of new size will be able to push through before dark. Likely the spots that like really long-period swells will have a few head high+ sets showing before sundown.

Winds look good…mostly light and variable early and then just variable winds around 10-15 knots on tap for the afternoon.

The WNW-NW swell will continue to back down as a little bit of SW swell slips into the background.

North County breaks can expect surf in the knee-waist high range…with a few waist-chest high sets at the standout spots. The AM tide is going to be a bit high so you might want to let it drop off a bit.

The mix of WNW-NW energy will be on the way down on Wednesday, and a little increase of NW windswell will move into the background and help keep the wave heights from dropping too far too fast.

Surfwise we are going to see pretty slow shape through the morning…soft and close to shore for many spots, thanks to the high tide that peaks right in the middle of the dawn patrol. Still even with the tide many exposed spots will still see chest-shoulder high surf…and maybe a few rare bigger sets at the standouts. As the tide drops we can still expect surf in the chest-shoulder high+ range with a few bigger waves at the standouts. Surf shape doesn’t look good for the afternoon…lots of onshore bump thanks to building local winds.

Winds and weather don’t look that great on Wednesday. The winds, even though they switch around Tuesday night don’t look like they are going to be super helpful but the shouldn’t be actively bad either. There will be some semi-clean conditions early…but expect periods of rain and onshore texture to pulse through as the storm continues to move through the region. Look for light/variable to variable-onshore flow for the morning. NW winds 10-20 knots will develop through the afternoon.

We will start off with some decent surf on Tuesday despite the overall drop in size from the weekend. Our swell will be a mix of W-NW energy still holding on from the weekend as well as a little reinforcing NW pulse that has pushed into the background. Most exposed spots will see surf in the chest-head high range…a little less consistent through North County. The standout breaks in South San Diego, basically from La Jolla on down, will have shoulder-head high surf with overhead sets (and possibly a little bigger) showing on the lower tides. Look for cleanest conditions early in the day and increasing WNW-NW winds on tap for the afternoon. Points and reefs will have the best shape…if we had any real ones in North County…but good sandbars and the various structures that can break up a swell will be ok fallback places to check.

Light and variable winds early in the morning but with building W-NW winds 10-20+ knots on tap by the afternoon as the next storm front moves through. Look for more rain through the end of the day as well.

New W-WNW wind/storm swell will be filling in on Saturday…starting off with some decent shoulder-head high surf at the top breaks in the morning and then building to a couple of feet overhead by the end of the day. Late in the afternoon/evening we will have a new WNW-NW swell (280-300) start to show…this will build overnight into Sunday. With the winds out of the S-SE for the morning I expect a handful of spots to be ok shapewise, water quality will be crap, but the surf will be at least rideable. …really it will end up being a race between how much the swell can build before the winds shift onshore.

Saturday winds and weather are looking a bit stormy with S-SE winds 10-15 knots showing across the county for the morning and then gusts hitting up around 20-25+ knots for the afternoon. Expect rain and possibly thunderstorms pushing throughout the day.

Sunday the WNW-NW swell and the W-WNW windswell are set to peak. Most exposed spots will be running shoulder-overhead+ with bigger sets mixing in. Top NW facing breaks will be a few feet overhead and possibly a little bigger at the really exposed spots. Shape won’t be all that great thanks to steady WNW winds…but the size will be up if a little window opens.

Sunday winds shift more to the WNW around 10-15 knots for the morning and gusts nearing 20-knots for the afternoon. Drier conditions overall but not much in the way of clean surf thanks to the new, lamer, wind direction.

Looks like sort of ho-hum leftovers on tap for early Friday. North County spots that don’t have a lot of exposure to the leftover WNW-NW swell mix will be in the knee-waist high range on inconsistent sets. Standout South County spots will have some chest-shoulder high sets through the morning but still not a lot of oomph behind them. New swell starts to show late in the day, mostly on the buoys, but there may be a few slightly larger waves coming in before sundown at a few spots. Shape isn’t look all that great thanks to steady S-SE winds throughout the day…but there are a few pockets around La Jolla that can handle those sort of winds…so keep them in mind.

Expect to see smaller and less consistent surf as the swell mix fades through the afternoon.

The WNW-NW swell will be fading on Monday, not totally dropping off, but losing some of the bigger sets for sure. I can’t wait for the high tide to move back a couple more hours…but even with it still stepping on the morning surf there should be plenty of waves sticking around once it drops. Average WNW facing breaks will be in the chest-shoulder high range with some occasional sets nearing head high on the low tides. The standout South County NW spots will see more consistent chest-head high surf with some less consistent overhead sets still mixing in. Expect North County spots to be less consistent and smaller than the other areas.

Winds will be light ESE through the morning, and then light W around 10 knots for the afternoon…the bump doesn’t look too bad through the afternoon so we might see some cleanup through sundown if the wind behaves.

Ugh we have another high tide trying (and succeeding) to bury the surf through the morning…still we have some building WNW-NW swell (280-300) that will be filling in pretty steadily and a few of our breaks are going to be able to work through the tide. Definitely expect the biggest surf to show through South County…with North County being smaller and less consistent thanks to the usual island shadowing.

Average WNW facing spots will have surf in the chest-shoulder high range with some head high sets showing as the tide drops. The standout NW facing spots, again mostly in South County, will have more consistent head high and overhead surf with sets going a few feet overhead, and bigger at times on the lower tides.

Sunday looks pretty similar to Saturday…but the swell periods will be a little shorter which sort of changes the swells focus at a few spots. Expect another morning tide-swamp…and then gradual improvement in both size and consistency as the tide drops off.

Winds look a little funky on Saturday…sort of light/variable to light onshore for the morning with more texture showing at the really open beaches. WNW-NW winds come onshore around 10-15+ knots for the afternoon. Sunday looks cleaner with light offshore flow for the morning and mostly calm to variable onshore flow holding through most of the day.

The tide kills most of our surf through the morning...so expect a slow soft start for most areas. As the tide drops off we will see improvement for most of the WNW-NW exposed areas. North County will be pretty small overall thanks to shadowing from Catalina and San Clemente islands…look for mostly knee-waist high waves with a few waist high+ sets sneaking into the better combo spots (there is a little S-SSW swell out in the water too). South County standouts will be in the chest-shoulder high range on sets…and maybe a few shoulder high+ sets at best spots.

New WNW-NW swell (280-300) starts filling in later in the day…possibly helping to increase size and consistency a touch at the best NW facing breaks as we head toward the end of the day. I am not expecting a ton of new surf before the sun sets, but it will be worth at least giving the top spots some sort of check if the winds seem light.

Light and variable to light offshore winds for the morning. WNW-NW winds around 10-15 knots expected for the afternoon…possibly lightening up around sundown.

The WNW-NW swell backs off a lot on Thursday while a small S-SSW swell moves into exposed areas. Overall I am still expecting plenty of playful surf…just less size and consistency across the county. Watch that early morning high tide…it is going to shut down a lot of spots.

North County spots will be in the knee-waist high+ range with some less consistent chest-shoulder high sets. Look for a few of the combo breaks, particularly the beach breaks, to be a little punchier and more consistent on the chest-shoulder high sets.

South County spots will be in the chest-shoulder high range pretty steadily throughout the day. Top spots will see some shoulder-head high+ sets on the more favorable tides…particularly at the breaks that have some exposure to the S-SSW swell.

Light and variable to light offshore winds for the morning. Light winds, variable below 10-knots, will be on tap through midafternoon and then may back down a bit around sundown.

The WNW-NW energy will be fading very slowly through the day…SD is a bit more open to the swell angle (well South San Diego is)…so it will hold onto the mix of swell longer than the other regions will. There will also be a touch of S-SSW swell (180-210) that creeps up in the background…not really enough to ride by itself but there may be a few more peaks at the better beach break combo spots.

Sizewise we can expect surf in the chest-shoulder high range for most W facing breaks…though size and consistency for North County is going to be worse than South County…and the high tide tries to bury things (stupid tide). I guess what I am trying to say is that North County will have “some” surf but it will be more in the waist-chest high range with some chest-high+ sets showing once the tide drops.

South County breaks will be more in the shoulder-head high range on most of the sets with some overhead sets still mixing it up through the first part of the day. If you have to surf early try and stick with spots that like the higher tide...or bring gear that can push you through the mushiness.

Light and variable winds on tap for the morning with a little bit of onshore bump here and there. Look for building W-NW winds around 10-15 knots for the afternoon.

New WNW-NW swell moves in on Tuesday and will peak later in the afternoon. Most spots will have consistent shoulder-head high surf with some overhead sets at times. The standout WNW-NW facing spots, particularly from La Jolla on south, will have more consistent head high and overhead waves with sets going a couple of feet+ mixing in. Look for more size and consistency as the tide drops through midday.

Winds will be out of the S-SE in the morning…not totally blown out early, but possibly a little bumpy in some of the more exposed areas. A few of the more protected spots will be pretty clean if the winds stay more to the SE. Rain and cool air temps will be on tap throughout the day. Look for the winds to shift around to the S-SSW around 10-15 knots by the afternoon.

W-WNW swell fades but holds onto enough size to be fun at the exposed breaks. The average W-WNW facing spots will be in the chest-shoulder high range with some head high sets at times. Lots of North County standouts will be around that size…but expect a little smaller, and less consistent surf throughout North County overall. Standout WNW-NW breaks, mostly from La Jolla southward, will have more shoulder-overhead surf with the occasional set going a couple of feet overhead. Best shape will likely be on the points and reefs but expect the beach breaks to start to improve as the swell drops back a few notches.

Plenty of surf on tap for Saturday but it looks like the winds won’t cooperate all that much…north county doesn’t look completely horrible but as you get down towards La Jolla and spots further south the winds stay pretty steady out of the NW for most of the day. Expect the average W facing spots to see surf in the head high to overhead+ range with sets going a few feet overhead at times. Top WNW-NW spots, mostly through South County, will still have well-overhead sets with the chance at some double overhead surf still mixing it up, particularly through the morning.

The surf cleans up and drops on Sunday. Look for light and variable morning winds with some offshore flow in areas. Surf will be in the chest-head high+ range for most W facing breaks…mostly through North County. W-WNW swell will peak on Friday…though conditions don’t look particularly appetizing. Granted a lot is going to depend on how fast this last storm front moves through the area but at this point it looks like SW winds around 15-20 knots and more rain on tap for the morning. The winds eventually shift more W’erly by the afternoon but that won’t really help things that much.

One thing to watch is the speed of the front. If the front stalls out we could see more SE flow in the morning which could at least set up some cleaner surf at a handful of protected breaks, mostly around La Jolla. Sizewise we can expect more well-overhead to douple-overhead surf for most of the W facing beaches…even the better exposed ones in North County will have plenty of size. The standout South County breaks will be going double-triple overhead pretty consistently… as well as some inconsistently bigger sets at times.

Overall the storm surf doesn’t look all that fun…but if you are willing to brave the poor water quality, and potentially hazardous surf, you might spend a few minutes checking out spots that can handle the mix of wind/weather/swell.

More storm and more swell continue to pummel us on Thursday. W-WNW swell and junky stormswell will hit exposed areas pretty hard…continuing to push in large sloppy surf and poor conditions. Sizewise we can expect more well-overhead to douple-overhead surf for most of the W facing beaches…even the better exposed ones in North County will have plenty of size and craptacular shape. The standout South County breaks will be going double-triple overhead pretty consistently… as well as some inconsistently bigger sets at times.

S winds around 15-25 knots will be on tap for the morning. Building S winds continue through the afternoon eventually topping out around 30-35+ knots late in the day. The large W-WNW swell will continue to push through on Wednesday…we will actually see the first “peak” of this week’s swell mix…with another pushing through later on Thursday and into Friday. Shape is going to continue to be pretty crappy…but there might be a little bit of a cleanup for some areas early in the morning as the next storm front pulls the winds around from the S-SSE before it hits.

Sizewise we can expect more overhead to well overhead surf for most of the W facing beaches…even the better exposed ones in North County will have plenty of size. The standout South County breaks will be going several feet overhead to double-overhead pretty consistently…with some bigger bomb sets lurking around inconsistently throughout the day.

Winds might be semi-manageable for the early morning but the weather/wind models are still calling for S winds around 10-20 knots…possibly a little more SSE in a few areas. Building S winds continue through the afternoon eventually topping out around 20-25+ knots late in the day. More rain and a chance for thunderstorms will hold through the evening and overnight into Thursday.

The W swell will be on the rise throughout the day on Tuesday…but steady S winds will hamper conditions through most areas.

Look for consistent shoulder-overhead surf showing for most W facing breaks throughout the morning, both in South County (at the average spots) and the top spots in North County. The standout winter spots…the really well exposed WNW-NW facing breaks will have sets going overhead+ and bigger early in the day and well-overhead surf by the afternoon as the swell continues to fill in. There will be a few spots that can handle the S winds…but again water quality will be very poor so you might want to think hard about paddling into the nastiness.

The waves will hold into the weekend...the W-WNW swell will be fading slightly on Saturday but then coming back up a bit on Sunday. Unfortunately it looks like the secondary boost in swell will be running right in front of a new cold front…so we can expect wind and rain to be right on its heels (likely arrive late in evening/night)

Not many changes in the size…North County will continue to be a little bit more shadowed and less consistent than South County but expect rideable, even good-sized surf all throughout the region. Sizewise the average W-WNW facing spots will be in the shoulder-head high range on the sets…with some occasional bigger waves still mixing in at times. The standout WNW-NW facing spots, mostly through South County, will be running consistently shoulder-overhead with waves going a couple of feet overhead on the biggest sets. Points/reefs will continue to have the best shape…most of the pure beach breaks will be pretty walled up unless there is some sort of structure or buried treasure to break up the swell.

Weatherwise look for light and variable winds through early Saturday and only marginal onshore flow for the afternoon. Sunday will start out with light/variable winds as well but S-SSE winds and increasingly cloudy skies will move in through the afternoon. San Diego likes the W-WNW swells and will continue to pull in lots of surf despite the slow drop in the swell mix. North County will continue to be a little bit more shadowed and less consistent than South County but expect rideable, even good-sized surf at pretty much any exposed break. The high-tide will make things a little funky through the morning but conditions will stay nice throughout the day so we will be able to wait out the tide drop a little better than days where it is a race between the wind/tide.

The standout WNW-NW facing spots, mostly through South County, will be running consistently overhead with waves going several feet overhead on the biggest sets. Look for clean conditions with E winds around 10-15+ knots for the morning and some gusts near 20+ knots near passes and canyons. Lots of swell showing in San Diego on Thursday…though we will need to keep an eye on both the morning tides and the wind since both are looking little squirrely.

The better WNW-NW facing breaks, particularly through the South half of the county, will see some bigger and more consistent surf. San Diego will have some new surf on tap for the morning, but it looks like the biggest size won’t hit till later in the day…(the fat morning tide won’t do us any favors either). North County spots will continue to be a bit shadowed by nearshore islands…so expect a little less size and consistency through those areas (which may not be a bad thing as the swell starts to peak).

Once the swell has filled in…look for average spots to run solidly head high to a few feet overhead on the sets. The better WNW-NW facing breaks will see some bigger and more consistent surf, particularly through the south half of the county. Top WNW-NW breaks, the spots that can really focus this swell, will be in the well-overhead range fairly consistently with sets hitting the double overhead+ range…maybe even bigger if the swell really produces. Lots of surf on tap for San Diego on Monday. The WNW swells will be backing down but will still manage to serve up some solids sets at times. North County will continue to be in the fun/playful zone…with most spots averaging around shoulder-head high. The top breaks, mostly from La Jolla southward, will see consistent head high and overhead sets with some of the biggest sets topping out in the well-overhead to several feet overhead range. The bigger waves will be inconsistent and a little tide sensitive in the morning but expect things to improve as the tide levels off later in the day. Points and reefs will have the best shape while the beach breaks stay fairly walled unless they have something to break up the swell mix.

Winds look good with light offshore to light/ variable flow on tap for the morning…maybe even moderately offshore near some of the passes and canyons that funnel the wind around.. Look for the winds to increase and shift a little more WNW (onshore) through the afternoon before possibly laying down again near the sunset.

Solids swell fills in overnight and holds into Saturday morning. A second W-WNW swell follows right behind the initial swell and increases wave heights even more on Sunday.

North County will still be a little bit shadowed by Catalina and San Clemente Islands…but since the direction is a little more westerly it will be able to sneak more energy into the region compared to a steeper NW swell. On Saturday expect most spots to hold around shoulder-head high with some overhead sets mixing in at times. The standout breaks will have some inconsistent sets going a couple of feet overhead. By Sunday the average spots build into the shoulder-overhead range fairly consistently…the top breaks will run in the overhead to well overhead range on the sets…keep in mind that as you get close to the edge of the island shadow that the sets will become less consistent and a touch smaller.

South County will pull in more size…on Saturday the average breaks will be running shoulder high to overhead+ on the sets. The best breaks will be consistently overhead with sets going a few feet overhead. Sunday the surf builds with average spots going head high to a few feet overhead on the sets. Standout breaks will see consistent overhead+ surf with sets hitting several feet overhead to around the double overhead range on the better parts of the tide swing. Expect the best shape at the points and reefs that can handle the extra juice.

Winds look good…mostly light offshore for the mornings and just a light/variable onshore pushing through in the afternoons. Good chance for those winds to lay down around sundown on both days.

New waves for the morning as the W-WNW swell starts to hit…nothing super huge, and probably some consistency problems as our tides drop away from a pre-dawn 5’+ high tide at 3:30am…but still a bit bigger than we had on Thursday. Average spots will in the chest-shoulder high+ range while the standout South County breaks see some shoulder-head high+ sets.

By the afternoon look for the average spots both in North and South Counties to be holding in the chest-head high+ range while the best W-WNW facing breaks see sets going a couple of feet overhead at times…maybe even a few bigger ones by sundown.

Points and reefs are going to have best shape but you might be able to find semi-workable corner at the beach breaks that have something to break up the swell a bit better.

Winds look good…mostly light offshore for the morning and then light/variable to light onshore for the afternoon. Chance for some patchy fog too but most of it will likely hold off the coast until the winds start to shift around in the afternoon.

Since SD is positioned a little further S-SE than the other counties it will take the swell a little longer to push down the coast on Thursday. For the morning we can expect more of the leftover WNW energy and the small SW pulse that continues to stay just above flatline. Most breaks will be in the knee-high range with some rare waist high sets. The standout breaks will be more in the waist-chest high range.

By the afternoon the swell does eventually start to show a little more energy…North County spots won’t change a ton (thanks to shadowing from Catalina and San Clemente islands) but it will bump into the knee-chest high range at the best breaks. South County spots will build into the chest-shoulder high range around sundown…standout breaks will have some head high…maybe even head high+ sets before dark. Definitely expect more energy to arrive overnight and into Friday.

The small, but playful WNW swell mix will continue on Wednesday…even showing a little more energy than it did on Tuesday. Look for the average W-WNW facing spots, mostly in North County, to hold around knee-waist high. The better WNW spots and top NW breaks in South County will be in the waist-chest high range with some shoulder high sets mixing in at the spots that can handle a little more tide.

Winds will be nice tomorrow…mostly light and variable in the morning with some pockets of offshore winds through the hills and canyons of North County. Look for the winds to shift more WNW around 10-12 knots for the afternoon, but possibly laying down again in the evening.

Looks like a few rideable one sneaking through early in the morning…nothing to get fired up on, but at least some marginally rideable lines showing at the top NW spots. For the average breaks look for knee-waist high surf...with most of North County, even the best breaks, staying about that size as well. As you move further south the better WNW facing breaks will be a more consistent waist high with some chest high sets…standout NW breaks will have a few shoulder high sets sneaking through on the tide push.

By the afternoon the new WNW energy will start to filter through…setting up a bit more consistency at exposed breaks throughout the county...and possibly a touch more size at the top spots by the end of the day.

Winds will be pretty good for the morning…light and variable to a mild offshore flow for most spots. The winds do shift onshore in the afternoon, likely around 10-knots…fortunately this is light enough that if we get lucky the wind could lay down before sundown, so try and keep an eye on it if you can.

Monday will still be pretty fun throughout San Diego County…the top exposed spots will continue to see surf in the chest-shoulder high range with some head high sets showing through the morning. The more average breaks will be in the waist-chest high range, with a few shoulder high waves at breaks that like the WNW-NW energy and the shorter swell-periods. Looks like the majority of the surf will be through South County, with more size showing as you get closer to the border. The North County spots will have some rideable waves, even fun waves, but it will be a bit smaller thanks to blockage from the nearshore islands.

Definitely want to watch the tide tomorrow…the swampiness sets in a couple of hours after sunup…if you are getting to the beach late, try and pick spots that can still function through a 6’ high tide

Winds will be light/moderate offshore out of the E-NE around 5-10 knots and conditions look like they will hold together for most of the day…and even when they start to switch it shouldn’t blow bad enough to junk out the more protected areas.

Average spots are going to see surf in the waist high range on Wednesday with a few inconsistent chest high sets mixing in at the better NW combo breaks. The standout NW facing breaks in South County will be in the chest-shoulder high range with some occasional head high sets showing at the spots that can pull in a bit of the SW combo.

The Swell
Saturday starts off with mostly leftovers but a WNW-NW swell (280-300) builds in through the afternoon and peaks throughout the day on Sunday. Small, much less consistent, SW energy (200-220) holds in the background.

Waves
Saturday will have mostly leftover energy for the dawn patrol…but still with plenty of rideable waves in the waist-chest high+ range at the average spots and some chest-shoulder high+ sets at the standouts. The new WNW-NW swell will start to move in later in the afternoon but may have a hard time showing through the building onshore bump from the local winds.

The WNW-NW’er peaks on Sunday with consistent chest-shoulder high surf at the average exposed breaks. Top NW facing spots…again mostly in South County, will have shoulder-head high+ surf fairly consistently and sets going a couple of feet overhead at times. Looks like exposed points and reefs will have the best shape but expect smaller less consistent sets in those areas as the tide fills in.

Winds
Saturday will see some eddish flow through the morning…so a sort of W-SW wind around 10-12 knots. Not enough to blow it out…but enough to make it a bit crumbly and sort of funky. Look for building onshore winds out of the W-NW in the 10-15 knot range for the afternoon.

Sunday will have mostly light and variable to light offshore winds and clean conditions. Winds will stay light through the first part of the morning and then build out of the NW around 10-15 knots for the afternoon.

Average spots, mostly north county breaks, will be in the waist-shoulder high range…maybe a few head high sets on the lower tides. The top NW facing breaks in Central and South SD will be in the shoulder-head high+ range pretty consistently with some overhead+ sets mixing in on the lower tide.

A few of the more shadowed breaks through the North part of the county will be a touch smaller and less consistent. The standout NW facing spots, particularly the ones that can handle a fatter tide, will be in the chest-head high range with a few of the biggest sets hitting a little bigger on the lower tides.

On Saturday we will have a mix of playful NW swell (290-300) and some inconsistent, but fun, SW swell (200-220). A larger NW swell may show a few new lines at the top spots by the afternoon…but most of the energy will arrive after dark.

Sunday the NW swell (285-300+) will peak and mix with the smaller SW energy (200-220). Look for the peak of the swell to hold through the morning but expect plenty of energy holding through the afternoon (and into Monday).

Waves
Saturday will see mostly waist-chest high at the average spots…biggest through the middle and southern half of the county. The standout NW facing breaks, again mostly in those areas, will be in the chest-shoulder high range with a couple of bigger sets mixing in at times. Look for the bigger NW’er to show a few new lines before the end of the day...but don’t expect a big jump until later in the night.

Sunday the NW’er (285-300+) will peak…we can expect an increase in size across the county with the average NW spots building into the chest-head high range. The northern half of the county will be a bit shadowed so expect surf to be on the smaller side through those breaks. The standouts in South SD will be bigger with waves holding consistently around shoulder-overhead with sets going a couple of feet overhead on the better tides…I wouldn’t be surprised to see some occasionally bigger sets through the morning tide push.

Winds
Saturday may see a little funkiness as outer water winds try to spin up a bit of eddy…it shouldn’t be totally blown out or anything but there is the potential for some onshore texture through the dawn patrol that will strengthen through the afternoon.

Most spots will be in the knee high range…and inconsistent…and mostly shorebreak as the high tide fills in…did I mention the onshore texture yet? Nevermind I think you get the picture. The better NW facing breaks and excellent combo spots are going to be in the knee-waist high range on sets…maybe even rideable if you break out the longboard on the lower tides. Unfortunately even the best spots are going to get hammered by the 6.3’ high tide that peaks around 9:30am.

Winds
Look for variable onshore flow during the morning but with winds remaining mostly light in the 4-6 knot range. Look for more texture around the pockets of fog that will be roaming around the county in the morning. W-SW winds around 10-12 knots move in by the afternoon.

Like I said above…look for the biggest and most consistent (both being relative terms) surf through unshadowed areas of South County.

Winds
Look for light and variable conditions early…but with a touch of onshore flow picking up by midmorning. Generally it will be clean but with a couple of pockets of texture at the really wind exposed areas, particularly around the areas of patchy fog that may roll through. W-NW winds 10-15 knots build in through the afternoon.

Transworld Surf Forecast – the North Pacific is set to go boom

If you read the long-range forecast that I posted this morning (or have looked at any of the swell models) you already know that the North Pacific is getting ready to lay down a smacking on the West Coast.

The majority of the energy will be heading to the Pacific NW as well as Northern and Central California. (Socal will get some waves but will be quite a bit smaller thanks to shadowing from Point Conception as well as the Nearshore Islands).
