San Diego Surf Forecast - Waves for the Weekend - 1/16 - 1/17/10

The waves will hold into the weekend...the W-WNW swell will be fading slightly on Saturday but then coming back up a bit on Sunday. Unfortunately it looks like the secondary boost in swell will be running right in front of a new cold front…so we can expect wind and rain to be right on its heels (likely arrive late in evening/night)

Not many changes in the size…North County will continue to be a little bit more shadowed and less consistent than South County but expect rideable, even good-sized surf all throughout the region. Sizewise the average W-WNW facing spots will be in the shoulder-head high range on the sets…with some occasional bigger waves still mixing in at times. The standout WNW-NW facing spots, mostly through South County, will be running consistently shoulder-overhead with waves going a couple of feet overhead on the biggest sets. Points/reefs will continue to have the best shape…most of the pure beach breaks will be pretty walled up unless there is some sort of structure or buried treasure to break up the swell.

Weatherwise look for light and variable winds through early Saturday and only marginal onshore flow for the afternoon. Sunday will start out with light/variable winds as well but S-SSE winds and increasingly cloudy skies will move in through the afternoon. Rain will be coming as well but it looks like heavy stuff will start after sundown.

San Diego Surf Forecast - For Friday - 1/15/10

San Diego likes the W-WNW swells and will continue to pull in lots of surf despite the slow drop in the swell mix. North County will continue to be a little bit more shadowed and less consistent than South County but expect rideable, even good-sized surf at pretty much any exposed break. The high-tide will make things a little funky through the morning but conditions will stay nice throughout the day so we will be able to wait out the tide drop a little better than days where it is a race between the wind/tide.

Sizewise the average W-WNW facing spots will be in the shoulder-overhead range on the sets…with some occasional bigger waves still mixing in at times. The standout WNW-NW facing spots, mostly through South County, will be running consistently overhead with waves going several feet overhead on the biggest sets. Points/reefs will continue to have the best shape…most of the pure beach breaks will be pretty walled up unless there is some sort of structure or buried treasure to break up the swell.

Look for clean conditions with E winds around 10-15+ knots for the morning and some gusts near 20+ knots near passes and canyons. It will be pretty chilly in the morning but hopefully it will warm up through the middle of the day. Look for light and variable winds through the afternoon…likely keeping things pretty surfable throughout the day.

San Diego Surf Forecast - For Monday - 1/11/10

Lots of surf on tap for San Diego on Monday. The WNW swells will be backing down but will still manage to serve up some solids sets at times. North County will continue to be in the fun/playful zone…with most spots averaging around shoulder-head high. The top breaks, mostly from La Jolla southward, will see consistent head high and overhead sets with some of the biggest sets topping out in the well-overhead to several feet overhead range. The bigger waves will be inconsistent and a little tide sensitive in the morning but expect things to improve as the tide levels off later in the day. Points and reefs will have the best shape while the beach breaks stay fairly walled unless they have something to break up the swell mix.

Winds look good with light offshore to light/ variable flow on tap for the morning…maybe even moderately offshore near some of the passes and canyons that funnel the wind around.. Look for the winds to increase and shift a little more WNW (onshore) through the afternoon before possibly laying down again near the sunset.
