San Diego Surf Forecast - for Friday - 1/22/10

W-WNW swell will peak on Friday…though conditions don’t look particularly appetizing. Granted a lot is going to depend on how fast this last storm front moves through the area but at this point it looks like SW winds around 15-20 knots and more rain on tap for the morning. The winds eventually shift more W’erly by the afternoon but that won’t really help things that much.

One thing to watch is the speed of the front. If the front stalls out we could see more SE flow in the morning which could at least set up some cleaner surf at a handful of protected breaks, mostly around La Jolla. Sizewise we can expect more well-overhead to douple-overhead surf for most of the W facing beaches…even the better exposed ones in North County will have plenty of size. The standout South County breaks will be going double-triple overhead pretty consistently… as well as some inconsistently bigger sets at times.

Overall the storm surf doesn’t look all that fun…but if you are willing to brave the poor water quality, and potentially hazardous surf, you might spend a few minutes checking out spots that can handle the mix of wind/weather/swell.

Lots of swell showing in San Diego on Thursday…though we will need to keep an eye on both the morning tides and the wind since both are looking little squirrely.

Sizewise the large surf will continue…average spots will be solidly head high to a few feet overhead on the sets. The better WNW-NW facing breaks, particularly through the South half of the county, will see some bigger and more consistent surf. Top WNW-NW breaks will be in the well-overhead range consistently thought the day with sets hitting the double overhead+ range as the tide drops. Expect points and reefs to have the best shape…and it might even be worth checking out the really protected spots if you are looking for smaller, more manageable surf.

Wind will be ok/marginal in the morning…mostly light/variable but with some pockets of NW texture at the really exposed breaks. Look for these winds to increase to WNW 10-15 knots by the afternoon. The winds are set to improve by the end of the day…gradually shifting to the N or even NNE by the evening, so keep an eye on conditions…there is a chance for some clean-up around sunset.
