San Diego Surf Forecast - Weekend Waves - 1/30-1/31/2010

Ugh we have another high tide trying (and succeeding) to bury the surf through the morning…still we have some building WNW-NW swell (280-300) that will be filling in pretty steadily and a few of our breaks are going to be able to work through the tide. Definitely expect the biggest surf to show through South County…with North County being smaller and less consistent thanks to the usual island shadowing.

Average WNW facing spots will have surf in the chest-shoulder high range with some head high sets showing as the tide drops. The standout NW facing spots, again mostly in South County, will have more consistent head high and overhead surf with sets going a few feet overhead, and bigger at times on the lower tides.

Sunday looks pretty similar to Saturday…but the swell periods will be a little shorter which sort of changes the swells focus at a few spots. Expect another morning tide-swamp…and then gradual improvement in both size and consistency as the tide drops off.

Winds look a little funky on Saturday…sort of light/variable to light onshore for the morning with more texture showing at the really open beaches. WNW-NW winds come onshore around 10-15+ knots for the afternoon. Sunday looks cleaner with light offshore flow for the morning and mostly calm to variable onshore flow holding through most of the day.

The tide kills most of our surf through the morning...so expect a slow soft start for most areas. As the tide drops off we will see improvement for most of the WNW-NW exposed areas. North County will be pretty small overall thanks to shadowing from Catalina and San Clemente islands…look for mostly knee-waist high waves with a few waist high+ sets sneaking into the better combo spots (there is a little S-SSW swell out in the water too). South County standouts will be in the chest-shoulder high range on sets…and maybe a few shoulder high+ sets at best spots.

New WNW-NW swell (280-300) starts filling in later in the day…possibly helping to increase size and consistency a touch at the best NW facing breaks as we head toward the end of the day. I am not expecting a ton of new surf before the sun sets, but it will be worth at least giving the top spots some sort of check if the winds seem light.

Light and variable to light offshore winds for the morning. WNW-NW winds around 10-15 knots expected for the afternoon…possibly lightening up around sundown.
