San Diego Surf Forecast - Waves for the weekend - 1/09-1/10/10

Solids swell fills in overnight and holds into Saturday morning. A second W-WNW swell follows right behind the initial swell and increases wave heights even more on Sunday.

North County will still be a little bit shadowed by Catalina and San Clemente Islands…but since the direction is a little more westerly it will be able to sneak more energy into the region compared to a steeper NW swell. On Saturday expect most spots to hold around shoulder-head high with some overhead sets mixing in at times. The standout breaks will have some inconsistent sets going a couple of feet overhead. By Sunday the average spots build into the shoulder-overhead range fairly consistently…the top breaks will run in the overhead to well overhead range on the sets…keep in mind that as you get close to the edge of the island shadow that the sets will become less consistent and a touch smaller.

South County will pull in more size…on Saturday the average breaks will be running shoulder high to overhead+ on the sets. The best breaks will be consistently overhead with sets going a few feet overhead. Sunday the surf builds with average spots going head high to a few feet overhead on the sets. Standout breaks will see consistent overhead+ surf with sets hitting several feet overhead to around the double overhead range on the better parts of the tide swing. Expect the best shape at the points and reefs that can handle the extra juice.

Winds look good…mostly light offshore for the mornings and just a light/variable onshore pushing through in the afternoons. Good chance for those winds to lay down around sundown on both days.

San Diego Surf Forecast - For Friday - 1/08/10

New waves for the morning as the W-WNW swell starts to hit…nothing super huge, and probably some consistency problems as our tides drop away from a pre-dawn 5’+ high tide at 3:30am…but still a bit bigger than we had on Thursday. Average spots will in the chest-shoulder high+ range while the standout South County breaks see some shoulder-head high+ sets.

By the afternoon look for the average spots both in North and South Counties to be holding in the chest-head high+ range while the best W-WNW facing breaks see sets going a couple of feet overhead at times…maybe even a few bigger ones by sundown.

Points and reefs are going to have best shape but you might be able to find semi-workable corner at the beach breaks that have something to break up the swell a bit better.

Winds look good…mostly light offshore for the morning and then light/variable to light onshore for the afternoon. Chance for some patchy fog too but most of it will likely hold off the coast until the winds start to shift around in the afternoon.

Since SD is positioned a little further S-SE than the other counties it will take the swell a little longer to push down the coast on Thursday. For the morning we can expect more of the leftover WNW energy and the small SW pulse that continues to stay just above flatline. Most breaks will be in the knee-high range with some rare waist high sets. The standout breaks will be more in the waist-chest high range.

By the afternoon the swell does eventually start to show a little more energy…North County spots won’t change a ton (thanks to shadowing from Catalina and San Clemente islands) but it will bump into the knee-chest high range at the best breaks. South County spots will build into the chest-shoulder high range around sundown…standout breaks will have some head high…maybe even head high+ sets before dark. Definitely expect more energy to arrive overnight and into Friday.

The small, but playful WNW swell mix will continue on Wednesday…even showing a little more energy than it did on Tuesday. Look for the average W-WNW facing spots, mostly in North County, to hold around knee-waist high. The better WNW spots and top NW breaks in South County will be in the waist-chest high range with some shoulder high sets mixing in at the spots that can handle a little more tide.

Winds will be nice tomorrow…mostly light and variable in the morning with some pockets of offshore winds through the hills and canyons of North County. Look for the winds to shift more WNW around 10-12 knots for the afternoon, but possibly laying down again in the evening.

Looks like a few rideable one sneaking through early in the morning…nothing to get fired up on, but at least some marginally rideable lines showing at the top NW spots. For the average breaks look for knee-waist high surf...with most of North County, even the best breaks, staying about that size as well. As you move further south the better WNW facing breaks will be a more consistent waist high with some chest high sets…standout NW breaks will have a few shoulder high sets sneaking through on the tide push.

By the afternoon the new WNW energy will start to filter through…setting up a bit more consistency at exposed breaks throughout the county...and possibly a touch more size at the top spots by the end of the day.

Winds will be pretty good for the morning…light and variable to a mild offshore flow for most spots. The winds do shift onshore in the afternoon, likely around 10-knots…fortunately this is light enough that if we get lucky the wind could lay down before sundown, so try and keep an eye on it if you can.

Monday will still be pretty fun throughout San Diego County…the top exposed spots will continue to see surf in the chest-shoulder high range with some head high sets showing through the morning. The more average breaks will be in the waist-chest high range, with a few shoulder high waves at breaks that like the WNW-NW energy and the shorter swell-periods. Looks like the majority of the surf will be through South County, with more size showing as you get closer to the border. The North County spots will have some rideable waves, even fun waves, but it will be a bit smaller thanks to blockage from the nearshore islands.

Definitely want to watch the tide tomorrow…the swampiness sets in a couple of hours after sunup…if you are getting to the beach late, try and pick spots that can still function through a 6’ high tide

Winds will be light/moderate offshore out of the E-NE around 5-10 knots and conditions look like they will hold together for most of the day…and even when they start to switch it shouldn’t blow bad enough to junk out the more protected areas.

San Diego Surf Forecast – Wednesday – NW swell and clean conditions continue

The Swell
NW swell (290-300), some WNW-NW leftovers, and some small SW swell (200-220) will continue to hold on Wednesday...but may lose a little steam by the afternoon. Look for the NW swell to show better in the south half of the county…and the SW’er to show a little better as you get closer to the county line.



Waves
Average spots are going to see surf in the waist high range on Wednesday with a few inconsistent chest high sets mixing in at the better NW combo breaks. The standout NW facing breaks in South County will be in the chest-shoulder high range with some occasional head high sets showing at the spots that can pull in a bit of the SW combo.

Winds
Look for E-NE winds around 10-12 knots for the morning…strongest near the passes and canyons in South County. Winds come onshore out of the WNW around 10-12 knots for the afternoon but may lay down to light/variable by the end of the day.
